In the year April 2009 to March 2010, the Prisoner Ombudsman's Office received 144 eligible complaints, handled 349 ineligible complaints and dealt with 197 advice calls from prisoners.

Complaints investigated in 2009/10 resulted in 126 recommendations being made to the Prison Service. Of these recommendations made, 77% have so far been accepted.

Changes to the Internal Complaint Process

Two key changes have been made to the Internal Complaint Process within effect from 1 February 2010.

The Prisoner Ombudsman can now take complaints from visitors to prison and the Internal Complaint Process for prisoner complaints has been reduced from a three stage to a new two stage process.
